Natural stone buildings that made history

It seems that the first large scale construction to ever use this type of natural stone was the pyramid of Zoser, in Egypt. 62 meters high and having a base perimeter of 109 x 125 meters, the pyramid was built in the 27th century BC. The Roman Arena in Verona, built in the 1st century AD, also includes limestone elements such as the amphitheater’s chairs. There are thousands of similar buildings built all around the world. And they all lasted for hundreds or thousands of years.

And now let’s move on to a few examples of famous constructions erected in the past century which are based on limestone. These buildings are undisputable proof of the quality and durability of limestone.

The Empire State Building, built between 1930 and 1931 is considered one of the seven wonders of the modern world. A symbol of the United States of America and of New York, the Empire State Building has 102 floors and they are all cladded with limestone and granite.

The Waldorf-Astoria Hotel was erected between 1929 and 1931 and has since become one of the most famous hotels in the world. Placed in New York’s Manhattan area, the building is 191 meters high and its facade is cladded with limestone.

The Flatiron Building was also constructed at the turn of the century, in 1902, and has become famous due to its unusual triangular shape with the peak aimed towards Madison Square. 87 meters high, it is also cladded with limestone and terracotta.
