Marble mosaic border – homage to Romanian traditional motifs

What was once the creation of anonymous craftsmen, has in recent years made a comeback as a source of inspiration for important fashion designers, after Yves Saint Laurent launched a collection rooted in Matisse’s ”Blouse Roumaine” painting in 1981. In 2012, Tom Ford included in his collection a creation inspired by folk costumes in the Fagaras area. Among other designers that were inspired by traditional patterns we can name Joseph Altuzarra, Versace and Gabbana. Local artists and designers have recently used our folk aesthetics as a source of inspiration. To name a few: Andra Clitan, Valentina Vidrascu, Nicoleta Chirica ("Iutta"), "Fire de amurg", Lana Dumitru and especially IIANA, perhaps the brand whose collections are most influenced by our ethnographic legacy.

Our Romanian traditional blouse, “ia”, has become an international trend in recent years and can be seen in fashion magazines around the world and worn by numerous celebrities. Following the reinterpretations of our traditional aesthetic values, we decided to join the movement. Through the three natural stone products we developed, we try to pay homage to the beauty, simplicity and subtlety of Romanian folk art.

The products that ingeniously reinterpret the patterns of traditional artisans are: : ROCK I border – a mix of Burdur Beige marble and Maron Emperador marble(12 x 27 cm), ROCK II border – which mixes White marble and Nero Marquina marble (13.5 x 27 cm) and ROCK III border, which puts together Burdur Beige and Maron Emperador (12 x 36 cm). Because all the stones are marble, their fine and polished surface creates a pleasing contrast with the traditional look and feel of the pattern. This modern interpretation of old motifs is what gives them a contemporary edge.

These mosaic borders can be used as decorative accents for bathrooms, kitchens, cafes, restaurants and other design schemes that are based on specific elements of Romanian villages. They are so versatile that they can also work in elegant and refined spaces, whether classic or with a modern edge (solid wood furniture, heavy curtains, impressive chandeliers). A minimalist approach or a shabby chic one (antiquated elements, copper piping) are also suited for these type of borders, especially the ROCK II border with its black and white contrast.

It is very important that one of the room’s main shades be similar to the cream or white of the ROCK II or ROCK III borders. The black and white combination (White Marble / Nero Marquina Marble) of the ROCK II border makes it easier for it to be integrated in any space, whether it stands out or blends in the surrounding design.

With only a few examples we can comprehend the boderrs’ degree of versatility. They can play a subtle yet important role in the design scheme of a room and completely transform it. Mosaic borders can be used for cladding fireplaces or other furniture elements but also as plinths. They are positioned horizontally or vertically inside the house and only vertically outside (in cases where they are protected from excessive weather changes).

Our mosaic borders can be positioned easily because they are already pre-installed on 12 x 27 cm, 13.5 x 27 cm and 12 x 36 cm meshes. Like for any other stone product, we recommend sealing.
