Polygonal flagstone

Polygonal flagstone is a separate category, even for the representative cut-out pattern, also known in English as "crazy paving". Although the technique deviates from the usual standards, it is not a new one, being used in Ancient Rome under the name "opus incertum", meaning a pattern with an irregular sequence.

"Opus incertum" was, in Roman times, the main method for cladding the typical buildings. Over time, diagonally shaped stones have increasingly been used to build paths or decorate different areas and today they continue to be point of attraction and be used all over the world for ever more diverse purposes.

Features:  being a natural stone, the Polygonal flagstone category includes a wide color range thanks to the distinct nature of the materials. The tiles are available with different sizes, the best seller being the standard size up maximum 5 cm thickness and the diagonal between 20 and maximum 30 cm. Then, there are the thinner versions with up to 3.5 cm thickness and the diagonal up to 30 cm. Also, you can have polygonal stones with maximum 50 cm diagonal and thickness up 3-7 cm or, less often, thin pieces up to 4 cm with a diagonal of 45 cm.

The composition of the stones belonging to this is different depending on the type of material. Thus, we will have fine granulation compositions for materials such as andesite, a clay-based composition for slates or a structure composed in gneiss stripes.

The most important physicochemical properties of polygonal stones are durability and resistance (against fire, frost, water, erosion etc.). Natural stone has also a good thermal conductivity, so it is a good insulator in heated spaces. At the same time, it maintains the air cool in the summer season; we could say that it has an air controlling feature. By its very nature, natural stone is an ecological material that will not harm the environment, and even less so the humans. Natural stone is also used in the construction of many ecological houses and the polygonal flagstone plays an important part in this process.

Polygonal flagstone has a long history, a tradition of interior and exterior use. Thanks to its qualities, the Romans used it most often for cladding facades and walls. It was also a material that did not involve high costs, because once extracted, it will not need a complicated manufacturing processes.

Nowadays, polygonal flagstone is used for paving the backyards, alleys, gardens and also cladding for facades of buildings, fences, groundworks etc. Interior works usually involves wall cladding. Depending on tile thickness, some may be more suitable in high traffic compared to others. Last but not least, we can speak of aesthetic comfort associated with natural stones. The comfort of our own home, as well as the comfort we want to feel wherever we are, is important to us as people. Decorations can either inspire and attract or convey imbalance. A fine choice for interior and exterior design inspired by natural stones will always animate the ambience.
