Tips for using natural stone on your terrace
Whether you choose marble, travertine, slate or splitface cladding for your terrace, you must consider a few details, specific for natural stone: thickness will be selected based on your location (exposure to extreme weather conditions), the waterproofing is essential for extending the durability and the recommended adhesive must be flexible and waterproof.
Choose the right thickness for your tile
Usually, all natural stones have more than one thickness available: 1.2, 2 or 3 cm. The thinner tiles (1.2 and 2 cm) are recommended for covered terraces, but for a space subjected to rain and snow, a thicker 3 cm tile is recommended.
Waterproof your natural stone tile installed on your terrace
Waterproofing – or sealing the natural stone with professional solutions, is essential for an extended lifetime. Of course, natural stone is shaped by nature, which makes it durable and resistant. Waterproofing your tiles is recommended, not only due to difference of temperature in Romania, but also because the terrace is by default an area with high traffic, which can be also used as dining area, for example, so flooring might be subjected to accidental staining.
You should also waterproof your terrace furniture and natural stone garden barbecue/oven (if you have an outdoor kitchen area) and for this we recommend LTP Mattstone H2O, an eco-friendly solution based on water.
A neutral water based sealer, which allows the breathing of the treated surface. Gently improves color and protects against stains, but also repells water, oil and fats.
Pay attention to your adhesive
First of all, you should know that you can also consider underfloor heating system: also available for terrace, with the main benefit of an easier cleaning during winter.
It is important to use a suitable adhesive for your terrace. If you have underfloor heating system on your terrace, or you don’t we recommened a flexible adhesive for natural stone, such as Weber Set Marmo Plus, available on our website.
Use combinations of natural stone
If you do not hire an expert in natural stone installation and you are afraid of assuming risks with the selection of materials, you must know that there are many possible combinations of natural stone that simply cannot go wrong. For flooring, we recommend marble, slate, travertine or splitface stone, while for the walls you can choose splitface stone or even mosaic, for a special look. If you have an outdoor kitchen on your terrace, you can add the rustic look of kitchen elements and the furniture can be cladded with natural stone (SKIN flexible slate is a simple solution for this) or for something more revolutionary, you can order special cut-to-size pieces.
