Polygonal stone
Polygonal stone is used both for pedestrian paths and for vertical cladding.
Horizontal installation of polygonal stone is done directly on the ground or on a screed bed.
1. Installing polygonal stone directly on the ground
For this type of installation, the following main steps are followed:
Check whether there are any underground utility lines
Measure and clear the surface to be paved of plants, roots, and stone debris; smooth it out and mark the surface
Choose the polygonal stone pavers; based on their thickness (usually about 5 cm or more), dig down to about 20 cm deep. If the polygonal stone is thinner, installation on a screed is preferred. In some cases, a drainage system is needed to remove water, or installation with a slope.
The bottom of the pit is covered with a weed-barrier fabric. A gravel or crushed-stone bed about 10-12 cm thick is spread over it.
It’s compacted, and a second piece of fabric is laid over it, followed by a roughly 3 cm sand layer. It’s leveled and compacted.
Another thin sand layer is added over the compacted one. It’s dampened.
The polygonal stones are placed, and the surface is leveled with a straightedge.
Flatness is checked with a level, and the stones are seated with a rubber mallet.
Sand is added to the joints between the stones.
2. Installing polygonal stone on a semi-dry screed
The following main steps are followed:
The first 2 steps from sand-bed installation are repeated, then the polygonal stone is chosen
A wire mesh is laid over the surface to reinforce the screed
A leveling screed is prepared and spread gradually over the surface
The polygonal tiles are laid, flatness is checked, and their height is adjusted with a rubber mallet and straightedge. Installation is done with a drainage slope (about 2% should be enough on flat ground)
The joint is grouted; this depends on the tile size, but the joint is usually between 0.5-5 cm
Installing polygonal stone on exterior walls or fences follows the same method as installing regular stone tiles, keeping in mind that polygonal stone has irregular shapes and variable thickness, so tiles need to be pre-sorted, and installation must be done with extra care.
