Installing steps

Steps are cut directly from slabs and installed following these steps:

make a cardboard template (if needed), based on the concrete (or brick) staircase, to be used to check measurements
very precisely measure the tile dimensions against the slab and cut the slab, using a handheld circular saw fitted with diamond or abrasive blades for stone, and a cutting table if needed.
check the flatness of the base layer with a level, and correct it if the surface is warped
check the flatness of the cut tile, which should be the same thickness across its whole surface, so the step is straight. If not, four self-tapping screws are installed a short distance (1 cm) from each corner of the tile, directly into the concrete step’s mortar. The tile is placed on top, and screw height is adjusted with a screwdriver. Flatness is checked with a level

measure and mark out the stone step’s position on the concrete surface, apply flexible adhesive (mortar) to both the substrate and the tile surface, place the tile on the concrete step, and bond it in place.

the riser is installed the same way. If the step is longer and extends beyond the concrete step’s length and width, the stone step is installed first, then the riser. If that’s not the case and the two meet at a right angle, the riser can be installed first.
