The Vein Cut technique (cutting perpendicular to the direction of the natural sedimentation veins) reveals the most dramatic and expressive face of travertine: fine and fluid parallel veins in shades of warm beige, cream, golden-brown and light grey, which traverse the surface of the stone in horizontal bands with natural and rhythmic movement — reminiscent of water waves or the brushstrokes of a Japanese landscape. What is Vein Cut?

Travertine is formed through the stratified deposition of calcium carbonate around thermal springs over thousands of years, creating horizontal sedimentation layers visible in the structure of the stone. The Vein Cut technique involves cutting the block perpendicular to the direction of these natural sedimentation layers — which reveals the linear parallel veins, the most expressive and recognisable characteristic of travertine. The result is a surface with fluid bands, with movement and directionality, that creates a dynamic and sophisticated visual effect, different from Cross Cut which produces a more cloudy and uniform pattern.

What is AIR Lightweight technology?

AIR Lightweight technology involves thinning the natural stone to a thickness of 3–7 mm and structurally consolidating it with an ultra-lightweight and ultra-resistant support — aluminium honeycomb panel, fibreglass or epoxy resin and glass microsphere foam. The result is a panel with the same authentic visual surface of natural stone, with the same structural resistance, but with a weight ~3 times lower — opening up application possibilities impossible to achieve with a classic slab.

Maintenance and care:

The natural travertine surface of AIR slabs is cared for identically to a classic slab: cleaning with neutral detergents (pH 7), periodic impregnation with a hydrophobic and oleophobic product specifically designed for natural stone. Acidic or abrasive products should be avoided — travertine is sensitive to acids. Avoid impacts to the edges of AIR panels — the reduced thickness makes them more vulnerable to direct impacts on the edge.

Professional tip:

Due to the composite structure, AIR Lightweight panels require high-quality epoxy adhesives or flexible adhesives recommended by the manufacturer — cement-based adhesives are not recommended.
