2017 Milan Furniture Fair
Milan is more than just a fashion capital, it is also the capital of design and the latest trends in interior decoration. Milan furniture fair is a major milestone of the industry in the area of materials, decorations and technologies used for interior decoration. Therefore, PIATRAONLINE went to 2017 edition of Milan Furniture Fair, for bringing you the latest trends.
2000 exhibitors from 165 countries
For its 56th edition, Milan Furniture Fair gathered more than 2000 exhibitors from 165 countries, between the 4th and 9th of April. In connection with this event and throughout one week, several related events took place, including an exhibition with lighting objects, another exhibition with office furniture and a final exhibition with the young designers of the moment, named "Salone Satellite".
One of the main trends of this edition was the improvement of space management and to represent it was displayed a more spacious, refreshed space, built between straight or sinuous lines. The room ambience focused on 2 aspects: simple dimension with light chromatic and lavishly decorated, from a graphic point of view, but also in term of shades. In search of inspiration, the creators have explored patterns and approaches from the inter-war period, with infused energies, sometimes subtle energies, sometimes explosive.
Natural stone keeps gaining popularity as the material of choice for designers. Benefitting from a high/functional diversity, the natural stone trends for this year reveal a darker-brown, black color palette, following last year’s trends that featured light shades and white colors. We have seen many furniture elements made from natural stone, such as coffee tables, dining and bedside tables with a design that associates tradition and avant-garde.
Moreover, the combination between vintage and modern, or shine with neoclassical features represents the defining attribute of all objects and interior designs exhibited this year in Milan. Besides the mix of geometric structures and apparently opposite design approaches, it was obvious the eclectic trend in interior design for this new season.
The natural stone was highlighted by combination with wood, bronze, ceramic, in elegant, mild colours: lavender, lilac, purple and blue – on one side – and the energetic shades: orange, yellow, pink or red. As colors of herbal inspiration, these contribute – sometimes at subliminal level – to consolidating an intimate and relaxed atmosphere.
The relaxing atmosphere can also be obtained with a game of lights, highlighted by the designers with the essential part played by the lighting objects. Even if the lamps had a unique design in search of some special shapes, the resulting ambience was always a loose, modern one with diffused light beams, oriented toward honed surfaces for a consistent look.
The concern for preserving nature was another feature of the furniture salon, many of the displayed objects being produced from eco-friendly materials or almost non-polluting materials. Naturally, natural stone is one of these environmentally friendly materials, which due to the diversity of textures and wide color variation, offers a wide range of solutions in areas such as home design, decorative objects or furniture.
As you can see, the trends highlight an eclectic design based on the 1920’s-1950’s themes, rectangular and curved geometric structures and usually bright, contrasting colors. The black or brown color marble was highlighted as material used as for furniture and interior decorative element.
