The surrealism and humour of natural stone. The art of Hirotoshi Ito.
"Although I like with many types of stone, most of my creations are based on optimizing the stone's original shape", says the artist. This "optimizing " means basically adding elements inside or over the stone to give birth to a totally different object. Many of these intrusions are a result of painstaking processes which require that the artist know the quality of the material and also have a clear artistic vision in mind. Other techniques used are sculpting and polishing, which the Japanese artist masters perfectly.
He trusts the ability of the viewers to let themselves seduced and accept the illusions his art proposes. On the other hand, it's easy to accept Hirotoshi Ito's playful creations because they are surprisingly realistic. Notice the folded shirts' refinement and lightness or the elastic appearance of the pullover.
Hirotoshi Ito, born in 1964, comes from a family of masons. He graduated the National University of Fine Arts in Tokyo and worked a lot with iron before moving on to stone. More than 20 years ago, he initiated a craftsmanship festival in Matsumoto, his birthplace.
"I've always liked humour and laughing. The smile on the viewer's face is the main motivation of my work", he says. His works truly reflect that idea.
Hirotoshi Ito's creations start at 1000 euros and can go up to 7000 euros.
